Cruise ship tourism in the Gaspésie: launching a tenth season!
GASPÉ, May 1, 2018 – It is with great pleasure that Escale Gaspésie unveils its cruise ship calendar for the 2018 season.
30 international ship calls as well as 12 domestic calls are scheduled this year, which also marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of Escale Gaspésie. In total, 42 ship calls and 30,656 cruise ship passengers are expected in the Gaspésie.
As of today however, 6 calls have been cancelled. Norwegian Cruise Line and Regent Seven Seas have recently withdrawn their respective ships, the Dawn and the Navigator from the Gaspésie destination. In both cases, the regulation put in place to protect the Atlantic Right Whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is the cause.
Mr. Bruno Bernatchez, chairman of the corporation’s board of directors had this to say : « This cruise ship season along the St. Lawrence and particularly in our beautiful region promises to be a another notable one. Notwithstanding the constraints related to the protection of the Atlantic Right Whale, the international cruise industry obviously responds positively and remains constant in its support of our destination. With the introduction of the domestic cruises – Les Îles de la Madeleine’s CTMA Vacancier – the 2018 calendar displays a busy schedule as well as an attractive diversity of cruise lines.
The season begins on May 5 with the maiden call of the Fram in the bay of Percé, and will end on November 3 with the Silver Wind. Executive Director, Stéphane Sainte-Croix: « 7 months of continuous cruise ship visits leaves no doubt as to our ability to extend the tourism season in the area. The attention it draws to our industry and the economic impact are beneficial. Only the winter cruises are left to develop! »
With regard to maiden calls, 6 ships will be visiting the Gaspé Peninsula for the first time. Other than the Fram (Hurtigruten) we have the Crystal Symphony (Crystal Cruises), Star Pride (Windstar Cruises), Arcadia (P&O Cruises), Silver Cloud (Silversea Cruises) and the Viking Star (Viking Ocean Cruises).
ESCALE GASPÉSIE is a non profit corporation that includes the municipalities of Gaspé, Percé and Chandler. Its mission is to develop, promote and operate a port of call for international cruises on the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula within the Canada/New England cruise region.
