The storied Queen Mary 2

Queen Mary 80 Years Old

Of all the cruise ships sailing the oceans of the world, some evoke powerful images that inevitably stir the collective imagination. One such ship is Cunard’s storied Queen Mary 2 based in the United Kingdom. Cunard is the oldest transatlantic cruise line still in operation and the Queen Mary 2 is renowned for its many crossings between Europe and both Canada and the United States.

Long before the construction of the Queen Mary 2 in 2003, the original Queen Mary set sail on her maiden voyage in May 1936, crossing the Atlantic to Canada. She went on to make numerous transatlantic voyages back in the days when ships were the sole means of making the ‘great crossing’. Also known for her recognizable silhouette, the ship ranks as one of the longest at 345 metres in length. She travels from Europe to Québec once or twice a year, and remains ever popular with locals and amateur photographers.

Québecers indeed enjoy a particular attachment to the Queen Mary 2 as, in September 2013, the ship came to the aid of athlete Mylène Paquette during her crossing of the Atlantic in a row boat dubbed Hermel. The adventurer, who ran into serious difficulties during her crossing, was pleasantly surprised to see the Queen Mary 2 deviate from her course and bring food and equipment which enabled her to reestablish communications, thereby most certainly contributing to the success of her challenging venture. Images filmed at the time were viewed across the globe, enhancing visibility for Mylène Paquette and unwavering attachment to the Queen Mary 2.

It is perhaps by reason of this special attachment that Cunard officials have increased the number of stopovers and diversified their sailings to include Gaspé and Saguenay, in addition to Québec. And the story does not end there, the Queen Mary 2 will be adding Sept-Îles (home port of Ms Paquette’s Hermel) to her 2018 sailing schedule.

Passengers may therefore continue to dream of a grand transatlantic voyage aboard the Queen Mary 2, just as locals in Québec will undoubtedly continue to admire the majesty of the great ship whenever she sails the waters of the Saint Lawrence. Check out the many packages on offer from Cunard.
