Outstanding results for 2016 cruise ship season in Gaspésie
ESCALE GASPÉSIE reports outstanding results for its 2016 cruise ship season which ended on October 20. With 30 calls, and a total of 20,674 passengers and 12,020 crew members, the corporation is pleased with its positive performance in 2016. Mr. Stéphane Sainte-Croix, executive director: «The numbers speak for themselves: increase in the number of calls from 2015 to 2016 is 15% while increase in volume of passengers is 18%. The total number of visitors to set foot ashore is 17,808, which corresponds to 86% of the total number of passengers. Tour excursion sales vs maximum sales capacity is 89% which translates to 8007 passengers. There was also an increase in the amount of time the ships were in port for an average of 9.2 hours compared to 8.5 in 2015. Altogether, the numbers are very positive.
Moreover, this season was characterized by maiden calls from luxury cruise lines such as: EUROPA 2 (Hapag Lloyd), MARINER (Regent Seven Seas Cruises), SERENITY (Crystal Cruises), REGATTA (Oceania Cruises) and last but not least, the QUEEN MARY 2 (Cunard Line). The highlight of the 2016 season, the QM2’s visit to the Gaspé Port of call marks the culmination of efforts to position the port of Gaspé on an international level.
Escale Gaspésie estimates tourism dollars, directly attributable to the cruise industry at more than 2 million. Considering the annual expenses from the port of call‘s activities, the logistics surrounding the tour excursions by various suppliers, revenue from restaurants and shopping and also from the ships themselves while in port, an estimate of 2 million dollars injected directly from the cruise ship industry into the local economy is more than probable according to Mr. Sainte-Croix.
Escale Gaspésie is a non profit corporation bringing together the towns of Gaspé, Percé and Chandler, whose mission is the development, promotion and operation of a port of call for international cruises on the Gaspé Peninsula within the Canada/New England circuit.
